  1. Activity 1: Value Scale in Varied Media 
  2.  
  3. Purpose:
  4. To explore the range of value for various media.
  5.  
  6. Materials:
  7. Pencils, crayons, pen and ink, chalk, charcoal, tempera or acrylic paints, paper 
  8.  
  9. Method:
  10. Create a value scale for each media listed below. Make the scale 1 inch wide and 11 inches long‚Äìeleven squares of one inch each. Create clearly contrasting values working in evenly graduated steps from light to dark (white to black). There should be a scale for:

  12. 1) Pencil
  13. 2) Black crayon
  14. 3) Pen and ink
  15. 4) Ink wash (diluted with water)
  16. 5) Chalk
  17. 6) Charcoal
  18. 7) Tempera paint or acrylic with white and black intermixed
  19. 8) Combined media as one scale
